The arts education advisory service was established in 2008 to support the delivery of inclusive and extended arts programmes in primary schools in the Waikato region. Schools and teachers often do not have the capacity and resources to do more than the basic curriculum allows, and yet research tells us that children benefit greatly from enriched arts programmes, and has also shown that schools with good art programmes generally have better educational outcomes than those who don’t. This is because engagement in the arts provides very important learning and development tools. It teaches children critical thinking, self discipline, how to express themselves and their views, and it teaches divergent rather than convergent thinking, all of which are great educational building blocks for future achievement.
We work with schools across the primary and intermediate sector to provide arts days and other opportunities to engage in the arts for the benefit of children and teachers. We take the pressure off teaching staff by handling all aspects of coordination and facilitation for these days. Teachers are able to gain valuable professional development alongside the children at the arts days, which can then be taken back to their schools to the benefit of all the students.
